Following Twins Separated at Birth

Nate Williams illustrated a t-shirt for N-Spired Story, a site where inspiring stories meet t-shirt design. Nate’s design is based on “Nature vs. Nurture,” a true-life story of twin brothers separated at birth, living out eerily similar lives. Both were named James and married women named Linda, only to later divorce and remarry women named Betty. They had sons, one named James Allan and the other James Alan. To order a t-shirt, check out Nate’s page on the N-Spired website.

Lennette Newell’s Ani-Human Series

Born out of Lennette’s childhood dream to actually become one of the animals her vet father used to treat, the San Francisco native finally gathered six different species this year to partly realize her wish.

“The picture set was made up of Susie the elephant, Tabitha the baboon, Tango the cheetah, Ace and Stripes the zebras, Daisy the Burmese python and Bombay and Cashmere the tigers,” said Lennette.

“Posing with them were Jasmina, Paulo and Kaela, who went through seven hours of make up, for four days in total.  I wanted to show humans and their animal brothers in a new light that maybe hadn’t been seen before. The exotic animals came from in and around Los Angeles from renowned Hollywood and television trainers and we shot at the famous Smashbox Studios in LA.  Each of the animals came with their trainers and every second they were observed and watched whenever the models came in contact with the animals.  Some like Susie the elephant were fine to work with, the only problem she posed was how to get Kaela on top.  In the end we used a long ladder and then we set about photographing inside the mammoth studios.  For Jasmina and the cheetah and tigers it was  bit different. We had to make sure that they were comfortable around her and that she had ample time to make a getaway should they become uncomfortable.”

Totally naked and posing for some delightfully funny portraits, Lennette feels that there is a seriousness that needs to be felt through the series.  “I think that we forget our origins as animals ourselves,” said Lennette. “We need to re-connect with nature and we should be closer to the animals that live on this world.  We should look on these pictures as something more natural and not as odd as they might first seem.  I used to fantasize about being the animals that my father used to treat and now with this project I am a little closer.”

“The tigers just wanted to play, but with their claws and the fact that Jasmina was naked was a problem for her obviously,” said Lennette.  “But that aside, the cats were watched at all times and everyone had a great time during the shoot.”

Ani Human is Lennette’s latest work and it has already received an honurable mention at the International Photography Awards.  “The reaction to this has been amazing,” said Lennette.  “People have taken to the pictures and that has made me very gratified”

Lennette Newell’s interview on her new Ani-Human series  was written by journalist James Nye (james.nye@barcroftmedia.com) and syndicated by Barcroft Media.

Agency Access‘ Creative Collision team of leading industry consultants, Jennifer KilbergSuzanne Sease and Amanda Sosa Stone, interviewed industry experts on the “Secrets of Successful Website”.

However, we know how much you love secrets. The listening, the knowing, the sharing.

Daniel Fishel answers the tough question…

[ Aug 25, 2011 ]     What is a hipster?

Are hipsters, baristas working at coffee shops, getting soused at art parties, riding fixed-gears bikes, going vegan, collecting tattoos and wearing vintage band T-shirts, or maybe just a simple black t-shirt marred by a few holes? Are hipsters, an artificial appropriation of different styles from different eras; a culture lost in the superficiality of its past and unable to create any new meaning? Are hipsters, ironic clones of one another? Do hipsters represent the end of Western civilization?

This amazing piece was done for Carolyn Fath over at Isthmus magazine.

Wednesday Tip Jar : Every Image Tells a Story

You’re a storyteller. A good one. With one very compelling story.

Yours.

Updating your portfolio [be it on your website or other portals] tells a story. It’s about where you’ve been. And where you’re headed. It leaves an imprint of your beginnings with a promising direction to your future.

What makes for a great story for you? One that captures your essence and just says everything about you. Is it a new exciting assignment? Or a personal image that stops us all in our tracks? Perhaps it’s a video that explores a personal journey that continues today? A new commercial for a product or service you proudly endorse? A music video that feeds your creative genius you wouldn’t mind putting your name to?

That story is yours to tell. And tell us you must. Tell your clients. Tell your rep. Tell your mentor. Tell your critics. Just tell the story. We all want to know.

A great story is worth repeating.

Man and Ball – The Old Fashion Game

The god has risen. He is not happy. What have the mortals done to his beloved Game?

Let Sleeping Gods Lie is the inaugural issue of Man and Ball soccer magazine, a digital UK publication.  Its writers – nay, firestarters – have a sense of humor and knowledge of the sport that will get them into trouble – but they will at least get your attention. Addiction has a new face.

Altpick Member Gant Powell has been selected to be one of two illustrators, bringing the interesting, unique articles to big bold life.  His decidedly tongue-in-cheek interpretation of the writers’ stories has found a target for a round or two of wit and word.  With titles including “On the Pleasure of Hating Jack Wilshere”, “Arsenal’s African Attraction” and “Englishman’s Guide to the Cop Ameria”, it’s a cup of life toast to what is arguably the world’s most beloved sport.

Of course, with a blog named “GantPants“, it all makes sense.

Check out Man and Ball here, where Issue One can be downloaded FREE, and Issue Two: Living On Both Sides Of The Game, is hot off the press and available for only £1.95.  They need money for new underwear you know, these lowly writer types.

The Critic Within

You know the one. You are on a first-name basis, you are that intimate. To silence or cultivate?

Here’s a thought. Critics don’t change the world. Those who take chances and risk criticism move the world.

Pushing boundaries beyond the possible? Boundaries exist for a reason, no? Should I or shouldn’t I? Is this right? How am I measuring up? Second guessing becomes a new sport. Handy tools of a critic. Wielded with tenacity.

Self-editing before we ever begin our first draft. Why must we impose such hard lines when our creativity flows so much more fluidly without them?

Silence the critic with this: Action. Less talk. More do. It gives us purpose and forces us to be present because of its very immediacy. We cannot do in the past or future. We can only do in the now.

Cultivate the critic with this: Permission. Allow ourselves to fail for this is part and gift-wrapped parcel of the joy of taking risks. Say yes to the moment. Yes, right now. Fall in love with the process of creativity.

Hear the silence?

Wednesday : Tip Jar

On Wednesday, we go diving.

Going deep to examine and shed light on your work. That incredible body of work that makes us all say “how did s/he do that?” As much as we enjoy being stunned by art in all its wonderful forms, we want to know the why. The how. The who behind it. What you wore in the creative wrestling of it. And who won.

Or maybe that’s just us.

So we’re asking …

What discoveries of truths in your life have opened a new way to create something original?

Are you content to repeat what’s been created?

Do you like Starbucks, Dunkin or Tim?

Just askin’.
